The original Koppers Company was founded by Dr. Heinrich Koppers, a young German engineer who developed a new type of coke oven that could economically recover the byproduct chemicals of the coal-cooking process. Fletcher L. Byrom enrolled in the metallurgy curriculum at Pennsylvania State College, graduating in 1940. He was named a Distinguished Alumnus in 1963 and an Alumni Fellow in 1974. A former trustee of the University, he was past president and a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association and was honorary chairman of the Class of 1940's 40th Reunion. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers.
